Find songwriting inspiration in beautiful St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Songwriting Getaway combines an intensive songwriting retreat with a relaxing music-themed vacation in one of the most ruggedly beautiful places on earth.

Music is part of the DNA in St. John’s from kitchen parties and traditional song circles to pub bands and festivals, launching the careers of performers like Great Big Sea, Ron Hynes, Figgy Duff, The Once, Emile Benoit, Rufus Guinchard, Fortunate Ones, and so many more.

The getaway weekend includes:

  • songwriting workshops and original song feedback
  • exclusive workshops featuring some of the East Coast’s most sought-after musicians & songwriters
  • group sing-alongs
  • one-on-one song feedback

We are thrilled to announce that the one and only Alan Doyle will kick off our St. John’s Getaway with a Songwriting MasterClass. Best known as the lead singer for Newfoundland’s beloved band Great Big Sea, Alan Doyle is also an actor, producer and best selling author. He co-formed Great Big Sea in 1993 fusing traditional Celtic sounds with pop sensibilities. Their albums and DVDs went gold or platinum for a combined 1.2 million copies in their native Canada. He released his second solo album, So Let’s Go, in January 2015. With a reputation as one of North America’s most treasured musicians and storytellers, we are thrilled to have him with us before Alan Doyle & the Beautiful Gypsies take their energetic show on a summer tour of music festivals around the globe.

Our final Saturday afternoon workshop will include a MasterClass by musician, writer and entrepreneur Bob Hallett. In addition to his role as a founding member of Great Big Sea, Bob has produced a number of albums for other Newfoundland traditional musicians and performed on countless albums. Most recently, he served as a music consultant on the Broadway musical “Come From Away.” In addition, he has become a leading music business manager for Newfoundland’s only full-time music management company.

Workshops will begin at 11am. Lunch and Dinner will be provided. Throughout the day, you will also have the opportunity for open songwriting time and one-on-one feedback with Murray Foster.

Full Getaway DayPass – Ideal for locals. Join us for 4 days of songwriting workshops and meals at the house (see itinerary for meals at Big Red) without spending the night. Workshops begin at 11am.

Wednesday Evening Workshop – A special one-night Songwriting Masterclass with Alan Doyle. Note: Please arrive at 6:45pm.

Saturday DayPass – Join us for the full day of workshops including a Masterclass with Bob Hallett. Lunch and Dinner will be provided. Workshops begin at 11am.

Single Room – All sleeping rooms include one queen bed. Linens and towels will be provided. The rooms have plenty of natural light and make a great place to retreat to for private songwriting time.

Non-songwriters can join their partner’s single room for the weekend and participate in group meals, sightseeing activities and evening sing-alongs. It’s a beautiful area to explore while your partner is doing songwriting workshops.

Toronto Songwriting School is proud to offer a scholarship to an up-and-coming songwriter based in Newfoundland who wishes to develop their songwriting skills, but would not be able to attend this songwriting workshop without financial assistance.
